LACR MX: A Motocross Haven for All Ages
Last weekend, LA Sports Network set its sights on the Los Angeles County Raceway (LACR MX) in Palmdale, California, for the exciting "Swap Moto" competition. The event showcased riders of all ages, from enthusiastic youngsters to seasoned experts.
One thing that immediately struck me was the meticulously maintained track. Newly renovated, it's easily one of the finest motocross facilities in Los Angeles County. The atmosphere was electric, with ample parking, friendly faces everywhere, and the enticing aroma of countless tailgates filling the air with great food. LACR MX is all about motocross while creating a fun, family-oriented environment where the thrill of motocross takes center stage.
Located just 63 miles north of Los Angeles, LACR MX boasts convenient freeway access but the story goes deeper than its prime location. Dirt bikes and motocross have been a cornerstone of the Barbacovi family legacy since the early 1970s, with CRC marking the family's initial foray into the sport. Jack Barbacovi carried the torch by running LACR MX from 1985 to 2010.
When the track closed, Anthony Barbacovi refused to let the dream die. He embarked on a mission to convince Granite Construction to breathe new life into the beloved facility. After years of persistent efforts, he secured their approval and brought in Richard Kutbach to oversee the meticulous rebuilding of the motocross tracks.
With the invaluable help of Jeff Gillespie and countless others, they meticulously crafted the main track, the vet track, and the dedicated pit bike/mini bike tracks. The foundation for all three was laid using high-quality mined sand from Granite, resulting in the soft and open tracks enjoyed by riders today.
Anthony Barbacovi's dedication didn't stop there. He continues to play a vital role in maintaining the tracks each week, ensuring everything stays in pristine condition. This commitment to excellence extends to the entire LACR MX team.
From the welcoming front gate staff to Don, the mastermind behind practice sessions based on rider requests, to the flaggers and the crew responsible for keeping the tracks perfectly prepped and watered, everyone at LACR MX shares the Barbacovi family's passion for motorcycles. Their dedication goes above and beyond, creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all motocross enthusiasts.
